James Joyce (1882-1941) taught
history in the Clifton School on Dalkey Avenue for a term
in 1904. Stephen Dedalus gives a history lesson in Clifton
School on 16th June 1904, (Ulysses, Chapter Two).
Today, Clifton School is a private residence called Summerfield
Lodge. The Nestor episode (Chapter Two) sees Mr.Deasy,
the headmaster, sending two letters to the newspapers via
Stephen on the subject of foot and mouth disease. Copies
of these letters as printed are on display in the Heritage
Centre.
Dalkey is famous for its literary associations. Local writers
include Tony Award winning playwright, Hugh
Leonard; internationally
acclaimed novelist, Maeve Binchy;
award winning film
director Neil Jordan and Bernard
Farrell, Joseph O'Connor, Desmond Forristal, Jennifer Johnston;
also, George
