In the middle ages Dalkey acted as the port for Dublin.
Seven fortified Town Houses were built in Dalkey in the fifteenth century
to store goods which were off-loaded from large ships anchored
in Dalkey Sound. In Goat Castle, part of Dalkey Castle & Heritage
Centre, you can still see the Machicolation and Murder Hole
which were defensive features of the Town House . The medieval
fireplace has also been revealed.
First Floor
Today, in the former living quarters of Goat Castle, you
can see the Victorian panelling and other interventions from
the late 1800s, when the room was turned into a meeting room
for the Dalkey Town Commissioners.
There are scaled models and information panels on: Medieval Dalkey with its two harbours and seven castles and Dalkey's Markets and Fairs. This room provides the backdrop for the Living History experience (May 1st –Oct 31st).
You can still visualise the living conditions in the 15th
century from the medieval fireplace and Garderobe
