Tours for Historical Societies

Tram Model Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre- where 21st century technology meets 15th century living history! The site contains a medieval castle/fortified townhouse, an early Christian Church, a state of the art Heritage Centre and a Writers’ Gallery with portraits and interactive screens with the work of 45 writers and creative artists from Joyce to Beckett and Binchy to Bono and more…

On the living history tour with professional actors, you can let your imagination flow and travel back in time and be enthralled by the extraordinary work of the Archer, the Cook and the travelling Barber-Surgeon.
There is an extensive amount of historical information on easy to use interactive screens . Our experienced guides will lead you along these.

Rathdown Slab

If historical facts are your forte, then come along and see the scaled models of transport systems finishing with the much loved trams.
Admire a great example of Dalkey granite in the Rathdown Slab. See Reading’s map of 1765.
Examine the original hand drawn engineer’s plans for the Town Hall from 1891. Have a giggle at the Pathé News footage of the crowning of the King of Dalkey on Dalkey Island in 1934 and much more besides.

We advise your group to avoid the weekend rush and visit us on a weekday! The structured part of the tour lasts one hour and you are free to browse afterwards for as long as you wish, until closing time!

Lunch locally: Three course lunches or lighter fare can be booked locally in Dalkey as part of your day out! Enquire for details.

Accessibility: Partial wheel chair access. We can accommodate groups who are unable to go up the stairs to the Living Quarters by arranging to have some of the tour conducted on the ground floor level. Advance notice is required.

Coach Parking: Available nearby. See Map

Shopping: Dundrum Town Centre: Some groups have been combining a half day visit to Dalkey with a half day visit to the European Shopping Centre of the Year at Dundrum.
